At the 2025 AUSA Annual Expo, we showcased our software capabilities in a SOSA aligned system management demo.  Its purpose was to show how multiple containerized software applications can run on a single computer for multi-mission deployments.

We received a 4-star Best in Show award from Military Embedded Systems!

‍Overview:‍

The demo shows the use of the SOSA System Manager to orchestrate containerized applications across multiple Payload Plug-In Cards (PICs) via the control plane network. The goal is to demonstrate the ability to create computers that can quickly serve multiple missions from a single set of hardware.  It supports faster deployment of mission modules with less overall downtime.

Key Concepts:

  • Containerization: The applications are containerized using the OCI standard.
  • Orchestration: The ability to load, start and stop applications using the SOSA defined Runtime Environment interactions.
  • Ecosystem Interoperability — Multiple Cards from Multiple Vendors: Using the same system manager to orchestrate apps on multiple Single Board Computer Plug-In Cards.‍

Key Elements of SOSA Software Demonstrated:

  • Each Processor PIC is hosting a SOSA Run-Time Environment (RTE) to support containerized applications.
  • SOSA RTE In-band System Management (IBSM) Agent runs on each SBC to interact with the system manager.
  • SOSA System Manager Client: Manager with web-based User Interface to support direct control of SOSA interactions.

The SOSA System Management was demonstrated live in a CMOSS Mounted Form Factor (CMFF) chassis that is aligned with SOSA, with payload cards from Elma partners. The design has been deployed and field-tested by the U.S. Army. More information can be found on the chassis here.
